MPs under pressure to back vote on EU

VOTERS are today being urged to lobby their MPs to back a bid to give the people of Britain a say on whether they want to stay in Europe.

Parliament is expected to vote next week on a senior Conservative backbencher’s proposal to require the holding of a binding referendum on Britain’s EU membership.

Peter Bone believes MPs on all sides are sympathetic to the idea and would be encouraged by an avalanche of support from their constituents.

  1. Sue, good spot. I have written to my MP on this. Little by little ...

  2. Nice idea Sue, however there are 72,000 voters in Witney who need not bother, in view of Cameron's statement to me that national policy will always trump what an elector wants.

It is his version of democratic rule!

  3. As much as I welcome his valiant attempt to get this through, there is just no way in hell our sorry excuse for a parliament will let it.

  5. The avalanche of support is the problem. Most people aren't even aware and of those who are, the vast majority want the referendum.

  6. Well, at least Stephen Crabb, ultra-loyalist Tory MP, is aware of how one of his constituents feels. We have to start somewhere.

  7. I understand your scepticism but, as we all know the EU got it's way by "nudging" a little every day. If we just keep reminding those in power that this subject is still high on the agenda, sooner or later, they will have to address it.

The worse thing in the world that we can do, is to stop nagging, or they'll have won.

I am constantly badgering those in power. I will not let them forget how pissed off I am. Sooner or later the message will spread to others who have been asleep for the last 15 years.

Unless we take to the streets in large numbers, we have no alternative.

  8. I'll believe it when it happens, Sue, unless, as you say, we take to the streets and scare the shit out of them.
